In our Orchard Road and Raffles Place Clinics, we help a number of patients recover from various sports-related or overuse injuries. And while we have a few different treatment options available, allowing us to choose the one best suited to the patient and the injury, extra-corporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is often one of our top considerations. This is largely due to its research-proven results when it comes to helping heal sports and overuse injuries. At Back II Life we offer both radial and focused ESWT and they are pneumatic and piezioelectric part of the only two DuoClast Devices.

For instance, an article published in Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine points to several studies which have found shock wave therapy to be beneficial for Achilles tendinopathy, a common overuse injury in sports that is related to the Achilles tendon and causes major heel pain . One specific study cited involved 75 patients that reported that their symptoms were either “much improved” or “completely recovered” after weekly shock wave therapy sessions.

The greatest cause of foot pain is Plantar Fasciitis and it affects runners and regular folks alike with sharp foot pain on the first step in the morning or after sitting as well as prolonged walking or standing. In a placebo controlled trial that studied 245 patients with chronic plantar fasciitis showed greater improvements compared to placebo. Radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy significantly reduces pain, improves function, and quality of life compared with placebo in patients with recalcitrant plantar fasciitis.

Shock wave therapy has also been deemed beneficial to treating jumper’s knee, an overuse injury to the knee cap and shin bone that can occur in jumping sports such as basketball, volleyball, and soccer. In one particular study, 73 patients diagnosed with jumper’s knee engaged in three to five shock wave therapy sessions. Almost three-quarters of the participants reported satisfactory results (54.2 percent cited “excellent” results and 19.3 reported “good” results). That success rate was even higher for performing athletes, increasing to 87.5 percent, most of whom were able to return to their sport of choice within six weeks.

Therefore, if you have a sports injury, give us a call and schedule an appointment to come in and see Dr. Stakes. We will assess your injury and determine whether or not shockwave could help, potentially returning you to your favorite sport sooner and healthier.

Extra-Corporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) can be produced by both radial shockwaves (on EMS devices) and piezioelectric or electrohydraulic technologies.
At Back II Life we are the first to offer both radial and piezioelectric in the EMS DuoClast® system.
Plantar Fasciitis is also a huge reason for ESWT - We use the EMS Swiss DolorClast, which is the only FDA approved medical shockwave therapy device.
Runners knee and iliotibial band syndrome also respond well to ESWT.

DolorClast method is also widely used in leading European football teams.

Dr. Stakes has been using this since 2008 and is also a regional trainer for swiss dolorclast method !
